Barn Conversion & House Refurbishment East Lothian

Our client had lived in East Lothian for over 10 years when they purchased the derelict listed barn and adjacent garden adjoining their existing three bedroom house. Our commission began in November 2009 and involved a full remodeling of the existing house, along with new connections at ground and first floor levels into the barn plus a connection from the existing house into a new garden.

Historic Environment Scotland placed stringent conditions upon the listed structure. All existing openings had to remain in their current configurations and were to be infilled with fully glazed timber windows, and endeavor to maintain the agricultural character of the existing building rather than ‘domesticate’ it with astragalled sash & cash windows. The existing openings varied in size, proportion and positioning and maintaining them all has resulted in a vibrant and intriguing interior
