Our clients wished to extend their new tenth floor penthouse apartment at Quartermile in Edinburgh. The open plan kitchen and living room of the existing flat enjoyed panoramic views south to the Meadows, but had only a limited view to the east with restricted access to a large, but empty, roof terrace.

  

Having obtained the necessary statutory consents and other permissions, and working closely with the design team and contractors, we created a 26sqm Sun Room which is used as a second sitting room. The extension is L shaped, narrower to the south to satisfy a planning requirement that the elevation facing the meadows had to be the same width as windows in the floors below. The wider part is to the north, creating two zones within the extension.

 

This fully glazed structure is built from the same curtain walling as the original building. The room provides a light and airy transition between the flat and the newly landscaped terrace. Occupants enjoy open views of the Pentlands and the Firth of Forth whilst simultaneously being protected from the harsher elements of the Scottish weather.
