Flat Refurbishment  Edinburgh

Over the years, Paterson Architects have undertaken a number of refurbishment and redesign projects for apartments and flats across Edinburgh.

Illustrated is a recently completed project within the Edinburgh New Town, involving the comprehensive refurbishment and reconfiguration of a Category B-listed, 1830s ground-floor flat within the New Town Conservation Area.

Previously used as HMO accommodation, the project sought to return the property to private residential use while creating a more coherent and adaptable home for contemporary living. The existing layout was carefully reconsidered to introduce a generous kitchen and dining area, new master bedroom, bathroom, shower room and utility accommodation.

The design retains, restores and celebrates the character of the historic interior, including its generous proportions, traditional detailing and existing fireplaces. Contemporary interventions, including bespoke timber cabinetry and new fittings, are deliberately restrained to provide a considered contrast with the 19th-century detailing.

The completed flat combines the character and proportions of the original New Town interior with a practical and contemporary layout for modern family life.

Planning and building warrant were obtained in 2022.
