We have been asked to explore the feasibility of designing two houses on a plot of land at Whitehill, Midlothian. With views north over Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth and south to the Pentland Hills. The site forms the eastern extremity of a linear settlement of building along Edgehill Road, and the entrance to the contemporary ‘Brambles’ development to the north of the site. Two semi-detached homes are proposed, arranged over three floors. June 2020

Our clients purchased this range of outbuildings in various states of dilapidation, with the aim of refurbishing them over time to create a spacious family home and office, with views east towards the Bass Rock and west to Berwick Law. Paterson Architects obtained planning consent and building standards approval for a series of significant additions and alterations, including a new roof terrace. June 2020

One of our most unusual and challenging projects to date, is a commission to design a set of new gas lamp standards for a property in the West End of Edinburgh. March 2020

We have now lodged the Listed Building Consent and Building Warrant applications for the full refurbishment of Haddington House, an A Listed building which dates back to the 17th Century. August 2019

We have been commissioned to design our third clinic for Gordon Vets. 01.02.16

Funding for the first phase of work to Stenton Community Village Hall has been secured, and work is now scheduled to commence in March 2016 18.02.16

We have recently been commissioned to undertake a feasibility study in West Edinburgh for a residential scheme. 02.02.16

Very pleased to have issued Practical Completion on a large domestic refurbishment/restoration completed last week, with Main Contractor Laurence McIntosh 16.12.15

Here is a snapshot of a recent residential feasibility study we undertook for a small gap site in central Edinburgh. Constrained by privacy, overlooking and daylighting issues the proposal arranges the principal accommodation on two levels above a partial basement and is designed in plan and section to track the sunlight throughout the day, whilst maximising views over the north of Edinburgh towards Fife. 01.06.15

Paterson Architects obtained planning consent for this 4/5 bedroom house in March 2014; which is now nearing completion on site. The traditional east coast vernacular of white rendered walls and 45 degree pitched roofs is given a simple but contemporary interpretation; with finely detailed corner windows, dormers, bay windows and decking areas. 16.07.15

Featuring our House on a Hill project, 'Britain's Best Architecture', is a highly illustrative account of what is now in British Architecture, this new publication walks the reader through some of Britain's finest houses. 10.10.12

An established Edinburgh based Hotelier commissioned this feasibility study for a lakeside Hotel and Spa. 180 rooms are arranged around a spine atrium opening towards the lake, where guests can hire yachts and motor cruisers, swim or relax on one of the flying decks overlooking the water. 20.07.12

Planning consent granted on appeal for an additional floor and roof terrace at Three Seton Mains

Preston Lodge Rugby Football Club invited six architectural practices to prepare outline designs for their new pavilion. Our concept was simple. Overlooking the pitch is a multi-purpose room extending onto a generous balcony. This room, whether focused on the pitch during a crucial match, or opening to the horizon as the sun sets during an evening social event is the primary generator of our proposals. 20.04.12

We have been commissioned by Belhaven Hill School to undertake a feasibility study for a new auditorium building within the school grounds.

On the site of an existing detached house in East Lothian we obtained planning permission for two five bedroom detached houses. Careful analysis of sunlight, daylight and overlooking requirements informed the design and site layouts of the new contemporary designs. 11.07.11

Paterson Architects win a limited competition for new housing at Calderwood in West Lothian

In April 2006 Grand Designs magazine featured Three Seton Mains. ‘Nick and Jane clearly excel in design minutae, whether its cutting a geometric shape out of a stair well wall downstairs to allow light form a small window to pass into the hall, or using sheets of clear glass to form an invisible safety balustrade for the outward opening windows upstairs. But refreshingly, what comes across is that this is a family home, not merely a show case for the couple’s skills.'
