This extension of a 19th-century stone barn at Carberry, East Lothian, provides a self-contained bedroom wing together with a generous raised terrace overlooking the landscape towards Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills.
 

The design draws on the history of the barn itself. Like many agricultural buildings, it has been altered and extended over time as its use and requirements changed. The new addition continues this tradition of adaptation, introducing a distinct contemporary element rather than attempting to imitate the original stone building.
 

The extension is deliberately simple in form, allowing the existing barn to remain legible while establishing a strong connection between the new accommodation, the terrace and the wider landscape. The result is an addition that feels like a natural continuation of the building’s history, while clearly belonging to the present.
