This project extends and adapts a 19th-century steading in Gladsmuir, East Lothian, converting two existing barns and outbuildings to create a self-contained three-bedroom annex.
 

The proposal takes its cue from the way traditional steadings evolved over generations – extended, heightened and adapted incrementally in response to changing needs. Rather than replicating the existing buildings, the intervention continues this process of organic growth, expressing its own time while responding to the character and history of the original steading.
 

A restrained palette of materials and simple agricultural forms draws on the site’s rural vernacular, carefully integrating old and new to create a unified whole, that is rooted in its setting while clearly expressing its own time.
