West Fenton Cottages is a B-listed house in the East Lothian countryside, originally formed from two farm cottages. 

The proposals extend the house to the rear, providing a new stone-built Boot Room at ground-floor level together with a timber-clad first-floor Hall and Bathroom. The extensions are carefully positioned to minimise their impact on the existing listed building while providing a clear and functional addition to the house.

The design responds to the agricultural character of West Fenton through its simple forms and use of natural materials. The stone ground floor relates directly to the existing masonry of the cottages, while the timber-clad upper level introduces a lighter contemporary element.

The approach is to create a sensitive relationship between old and new, allowing the historic character of the original farm cottages to remain legible while integrating the new accommodation into a unified whole. The result is a contemporary East Lothian house extension that is rooted in the materiality, scale and character of its rural setting.
